Ubuntu Releases History – A Journey to The Past
Ubuntu, the incredibly versatile operating system based on Debian GNU/Linux is the most used linux system used nowadays. It is pretty standardized that ubuntu makes two new releases every year with the latest one being Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope). I thought it would be nice to make a small overview and see what have the ubuntu releases been since today.
Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty Warthog)
Released on 20th of October 2004, it included programs like Mozilla Firefox, Gaim, Gnome, Gimp, OpenOffice and many more.
Ubuntu 5.04 (Hoary Hedgehog)
Released on the 8th of April 2005, the new version included things like an update manager, upgrade notifier, readahead and grepmap, suspend, hibernate and standby support, dynamic frequency scaling for processors, ubuntu hardware database, Kickstart installation, and APT authentication.
Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger)
Released on 12 October 2005, the new version included a graphical bootloader (Usplash), an Add/Remove Applications tool, a menu editor (alacarte), an easy language selector, logical volume management support, full Hewlett-Packard printer support, OEM installer support, and Launchpad integration for bug reporting and software development.
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS (Dapper Drake)
Released on 1 June 2006, it was the first Long Term Support release. An important new feature was that the installation cd was merged with the Live CD.
Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft)
Released on 26 October 2006, Edgy Eft added a heavily modified Human theme, automated crash reports, tomboy note taking and some more.
Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)
Released on 19 April 2007, Feisty Fawn had a bunch of new features like Compiz desktop effects, a new disk usage analyser, GNOME control center and some more programs like Chess.
Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon)
Released on 18 October 2007, this release had features like fast desktop search, graphical tool for X.org, the all important FULL NTFS support (read/write) and more.
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)
This was released on 24 April 2008 and it included a whole bunch of new features and programs like brasero burning program, Transmission bittorrent client, Active Directory Authentication, some compiz improvements and more.
Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex)
Born at 30th of October 2008, had several new improvements and the ability for a guest account with limited abilities and included enhancements of several programs like PHP.
Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope)
The newest release, 3 days ago, at 23 April 2009. A new and very important touch is the faster boot time and integration of various programs in the desktop interface. For example, if you hover over an mp3 file for 2 seconds, the file will start to play without any player Nice feature
Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala)
Not released yet ! Expected on 29 October 2009 and is said that the boot time will be faster than Jaunty Jackalope.
These are the ubuntu releases till today, let’s hope that it will become even better in the newer releases to come
